Rules & Remediation
Axe DevTools for Mobile is built with a proprietary rules engine that adapts the WCAG criteria for HTML to a mobile context. Our rules have been designed and tested by industry experts at Deque, many of whom sit on WCAG committees and participate in W3C working groups. When you test your app with Axe DevTools for Mobile, you get the benefit of 20+ years of accessibility experience, with a commitment to zero false positives.
Rule Sources
- Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Success Criteria
- Best Practice - This may be defined by a note in the WCAG, Deque Accessibility Experts, or recommendations from Apple or Google.
Throughout our rules documentation, you'll find references to Name, Role, and Value. Please refer to WCAG's definitions.
WCAG2ICT
WCAG2ICT (WCAG 2 - Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies) is a guide from the W3C that explains how WCAG success criteria apply to non-web software, including native mobile apps. Each of the Axe DevTools Mobile rules is mapped to a specific WCAG success criterion, and every one of those Level A and AA criteria is confirmed by WCAG2ICT as being applicable to mobile apps. Note that some of our rules map to Level AAA criteria, which WCAG2ICT does not cover. So when you run our automated checks, you are testing your app against WCAG as it is meant to be applied on mobile. Our rules cover many of the applicable criteria; to see what automated testing cannot catch on its own, see What's Left to Test.
